Johannesburg – South Africans expressed shock and sadness after the news of the late musician, Gee Six Five, was announced by her niece on social media.
The popular singer was introduced to South Africans just a month ago when a video of her promoting the popular song “Obani Lababantu” started trending on social media. In the video, she said that the name GeeSixFive represented the fact that she was a grandmother at her age of 65.
News of her passing was first announced on Twitter by her popular niece, Sbu Mpungose, who is the former editor of both Bona and True Love magazine.
Her fans, including popular faces such as Mmusi Maimane and Duduzane Zuma, took to both Twitter and Facebook to express their gratitude to the late singer.
South Africans have praised GeeSixFive for her bravery and inspiration for recording music that is meant for the young generation at her old age. They claim she is a symbol of the notion which suggests that nothing is impossible and no one has an excuse not to achieve their dreams.
Her family says, GeeSixFive (Mrs ON Selepe), was in self-isolation after she tested positive for Covid-19 when she passed on.
At the time of her passing, she was enrolled as a PhD student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
