Polokwane – Dr. Alex Mashilo, an activist and well known intellectual, has been appointed the new special advisor to the Premier of Limpopo. According to the Limpopo provincial government, Premier Chupu Mathabatha has appointed Dr. Alex Mashilo as his Special Advisor with effect from the 1st of December 2020.
Mashilo is known to be one of the best think tanks in the country with a proven track record. He is currently a Central Committee member of South Africa’s vanguard party and second oldest movement in the African Continent, the South African Communist Party (SACP). Mashilo has been National Spokesperson for the SACP for about a decade and he is known to be one of the most intellectual and practical policy experts in the country.
The Office of the Premier in Limpopo affirmed that “Dr. Alex Mashilo’s new advisory role is mainly focused on Economic Development, Communications and Stakeholder Relations. He will immediately work alongside the entire Executive Council in helping the Premier to carry out his constitutional mandate”.
Endorsing the appointment of Dr. Mashilo, the SACP said there was prior consultation between the SACP and Dr Mashilo leading to his acceptance of the appointment, based on the SACP’s leadership guidance and emphasis that the sub-national spheres of the state and development, namely provincial and local government levels, are as important as the national sphere. “It is important to assert in practice the necessity to contribute and build professional and technical capacity at all levels of our government to serve the people”.
Dr. Alex Mashilo’s academic credentials speak for themselves. He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and his research focused on economic and social upgrading in global production networks.
He also holds a Master of Arts (MA) degree from Wits University in Labour Policy and Globalisation.
The SACP says it is confident that Dr Mashilo will contribute meaningfully to our national development imperatives in his new role given the meritocratic grounds on which Premier Mathabatha appointed him and the role he has been playing in policy development, as well as in the labour movement historically.
In addition to his impeccable academic qualifications and work experience in the global manufacturing industry, Dr. Mashilo is a seasoned communications practitioner and policy development advocacy activist with a background in working class movement with a traceable track record from the youth movement, trade unions, academia and politics.
Dr. Mashilo’s appointment follows the untimely passing on of his former advisor, Ambassador Kgosi Mathebe.
